I’ll finish up this theme of money-as-design by linking to Jason Santa Maria’s Designing Local Currency assignment at SVA from 2009.

Last month, students in Jason Santa Maria’s Communicating Design class were assigned the task of designing their own local currency. Inspired by Ithaca Hours and BerkShares, students pulled a neighborhood out of a hat, and were asked to research their neighborhood to determine what characteristics should be represented on its currency.

How Many Really compares the number of people involved in key historical events or situations with the number of people one knows through social media like Facebook or Twitter…

These visualizations are reminiscent of artist and color theorist Josef Albers. If you only read one color theory book in your life, his Interaction of Color is the one. It’s advanced but accessible, and is composed on one-page color problems and exercises that are haiku-like in their simplicity.
